Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences Embarks on a New Academic Structure to Address Global Challenges
In April 2025, the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences at Gifu University entered a new era with the launch of a reorganized four-department structure. Since its establishment in 2004, the Faculty has expanded its scope beyond traditional agriculture to encompass the fields of food science, pharmaceutical science, and environmental industries. This evolution was reflected in its previous organization of two educational programs and the Joint Department of Veterinary Medicine. Over the years, these programs have provided high-quality education and research in applied life sciences, production and environmental sciences, and veterinary medicine.
Guided by the mission to contribute to sustainable human life and the improvement of living environments, the Faculty has pursued five core objectives: ensuring a stable and safe food supply, promoting environmentally harmonious food production, restoring and conserving the natural environment, developing high-value functional foods to promote health, and enhancing public health.
However, rapid advances in science and technology, societal transformation, and the demographic shift toward a declining birthrate have significantly altered both global and regional needs. In response, the Faculty has restructured its organization to strengthen academic specialization while fostering problem-solving skills essential for addressing complex, real-world issues.
The new structure consists of the Department of Applied Bioscience and Chemistry, the Department of Food and Agricultural Science, the Department of Biosphere and Environmental Sciences, and the Joint Department of Veterinary Medicine. By integrating expertise in life, food, and environmental sciences, this reorganization aims to produce graduates equipped with advanced knowledge, practical competence, and a global perspective--ready to contribute to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and human well-being on both local and international scales.
